New research suggests that the way a person breathes during sleep may play a larger role in heart health than previously understood. A study published in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology has examined the link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cardiovascular disease, highlighting the role of the body’s internal clock.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Researchers found that disrupted breathing patterns do more than affect daytime energy levels. They can trigger a series of biological responses that increase the risk of both sleep apnea and heart disease. These responses include inflammation, oxidative stress, and changes in how cells detect and use oxygen.

The study points to the circadian rhythm as a central factor. Patients with OSA often show abnormal daily patterns in key health markers such as blood pressure, heart rate, melatonin production, and cortisol levels. The research also found that intermittent drops in oxygen during sleep can alter the expression of core clock genes in heart and lung tissue within a few hours.

One promising approach discussed in the study is chronotherapy, which involves aligning medical treatments with the body’s natural rhythms. This method may help reduce both sleep apnea and cardiovascular risks.

Experts note that supporting healthy nighttime breathing and circadian rhythms can be done through several practical steps. Keeping a consistent sleep and wake schedule, even on weekends, helps reinforce the body’s natural clock. Creating a cool, dark, and quiet bedroom environment promotes deep, uninterrupted rest.

Some research suggests that magnesium supplementation before bed may support muscle relaxation, including the muscles in the airway, and can improve sleep quality. Managing evening stress through breathwork, gentle stretching, or meditation may also prevent disruption to the circadian rhythm. Sleeping on the side rather than the back can help keep airways open during the night.

People who experience snoring, gasping, or suspect they have breathing issues during sleep are advised to speak with a healthcare provider. The findings underscore that heart health is not only about diet and exercise but also about how a person breathes and sleeps.
