A recent large-scale study has found that regularly drinking green tea may help protect the brain from age-related changes. The research suggests a link between green tea consumption and fewer white matter lesions, which are tied to cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and vascular dementia.

As people age, the brain undergoes structural changes. White matter lesions, which affect communication between brain regions, tend to accumulate over time. Genetics, vascular health, and lifestyle habits influence this process.

Green tea contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These compounds help protect brain cells, reduce vascular damage, and support neural health.

The study analyzed over 8,700 adults without dementia. Adults who drank about three cups of green tea daily had roughly 3 percent fewer white matter lesions than those who drank less than one cup. Drinking six cups daily was linked to a 6 percent reduction.

Coffee did not show the same effects. Unlike green tea, coffee had no measurable impact on white matter, hippocampal volume, or total brain size.

Catechins like EGCG reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. They also protect blood vessels and may help preserve cognitive function.

Adding green tea to a daily routine is simple. Drinking three to six cups per day mirrors the protective levels seen in the study. Unsweetened or lightly brewed green tea maximizes antioxidant intake.

Pairing green tea with other healthy habits can amplify cognitive benefits. Regular movement, quality sleep, and nutrient-dense meals rich in omega-3s, colorful produce, and lean proteins support brain health.

Green tea offers an easy, science-backed way to support long-term brain health. Each cup provides a daily boost for cognitive resilience. Combined with healthy habits, these small rituals can add up to lasting protection as people age.
