Olive oil is a key part of the Mediterranean diet. Research over decades has linked regular use to better heart health, healthy aging, and longer life. This is partly due to its fatty acids, including oleic monounsaturated fats. Olive oil is also a rich source of polyphenols, which are plant compounds with antioxidant properties.

The problem is that most olive oils do not list their polyphenol content. Levels can change based on the type of olive, when it was harvested, and how it was processed. High-phenolic olive oils are made to keep higher levels of these compounds. Producers often use early harvests and careful cold extraction.

One dietitian sampled several high-polyphenol olive oils side by side. She looked at flavor, freshness, and sourcing. Here is what she found.

Best Overall: Kosterina Extra Virgin Duo

Origin: Greece. Olive variety: Koroneiki. Polyphenols: 350–500 mg/kg. Price: $55.

This set was the top pick because it includes two oils. One is for everyday cooking and baking. The other is a finishing oil for drizzling over vegetables, salads, or bread. Both are made from Koroneiki olives grown in Greece. The flavor is fresh and peppery but not too strong. It is a good choice for people new to high-phenolic olive oil.

Best Drizzling Oil: Fresh Press Farms Pure Gold

Origin: United States. Olive variety: Koroneiki, Arbosana, Arbequina. Polyphenols: 1,000 mg/kg. Price: $13.

This oil was the biggest surprise. At $13, it is the most affordable option. It is light and herbaceous. The guaranteed polyphenol concentration is 1,000 mg/kg. The oil is made in Georgia. Olives are grown, harvested, cold-pressed, and bottled on site. It reaches shelves within three months. The oils are not certified organic, but no chemical fertilizers are used.

Best Bold-Flavored Olive Oil: Damya Robust Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Origin: Tunisia. Olive variety: Chetoui. Polyphenols: 831.24 mg/kg. Price: $32.

This oil has a strong personality. It is made from Chetoui olives, a type native to Tunisia. The flavor is intense but balanced, with a peppery finish. It works well with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and aged cheeses. The oil is USDA-certified organic. It is not blended across regions or harvests.

Best Mixed Olive Variety: Kyoord High-Phenolic Olive Oil

Origin: Greece. Olive variety: Lianolia, Koroneiki. Polyphenols: 1,007 mg/kg. Price: $49.

This oil has a high polyphenol concentration. It contains more than 1,000 mg/kg. It is rich in oleocanthal and oleacein, compounds linked to the peppery taste and antioxidant effects. The flavor is earthy. It pairs well with savory dishes like roasted vegetables, pasta, and soups. The price reflects the work needed to keep the compounds intact.

How the Selections Were Made

To find the best oils, the reviewer looked for brands that focus on quality and transparency. Every oil on the list provides verified polyphenol testing. Only extra virgin olive oils with at least 250 mg/kg of polyphenols were considered. Preference went to brands that are clear about where and how olives are grown. Early-harvest, cold-pressed oils were favored. Flavor and value were also considered.

What Counts as High Polyphenol

Polyphenol levels are measured in milligrams per kilogram of oil. There is no single rule for what counts as high, but these ranges are common: 250–500 mg/kg is high, 500–800 mg/kg is very high, and 800 mg/kg or more is exceptionally high. Harvest timing matters. Olives picked early in the season, while still green, have more polyphenols. Cold pressing shortly after harvest helps keep these compounds stable.
